Born on 2 September, 1935 in Moscow.
He made his theatrical debut as an actor in the Mossoviet Theatre in 1957. But a creative dissatisfaction with the Mossoviet's aesthetic principles at the time and a sharp feeling of “contemporariness" prompted the actor to leave the stabile company and led him to search out “his" director: in the Satire Theatre, the Theatre on Malaya Bronnaya, and the Lenkom Theatre.
Finally, in 1969, Oleg Efremov invited the actor to the Sovremennik Theatre. At the Sovremennik, the actor’s gifts were uncovered and began to ring out. In this theatre, the actor has already spent many years.
From 1993 onwards, he has lived with his third wife, the actress Olga Ostroumovaya, a wholly harmonious marriage: “I’m happy for her successes, and she’s happy for mine – if there are any.”
