Giatsintova Sofiya

Giatsintova Sofiya

In our rowdy company of young people, Giatsintova was that one actress that everyone respected. And not just for her past. I remember at least our artistic meetings and readings of new plays. Let’s say, for example, a play of some “movist,” as V. Kataev would have said, was being read.

During the reading, I looked up for a moment at Sofiya Vladimirovna. Her eyes were glistening with anger. The contemporary jargon was alien to that, amazingly intelligent but still somehow “old-fashioned” woman. And this fashionable slang, scenario, and so on were all really annoying her. Nevertheless, in the course of the play she took notes on absolutely everything, and I and everyone else knew that when the reading ended, her comments would be the most valuable of all that would be uttered there in the artistic committee.

We were always surprised at her capacity for calm and objective analysis. There was no shade of vain petulance, not an ounce of the idle talk which usually predominated half of the other committee members’ commentary. How pleasant it was to stop by her dressing room and just sit…
